CAFE HANAMIZUKI | Japanese Comfort Food & Cafe

いただきます!
The Scandinavian inspired interior design is modern yet cozy, the noise level is on the quiet side, and the staffs are friendly without over-interacting (since it's a cafe, there is no waiting service). These three factors already won over my heart and I was already madly in love with this place.

But, my surprise did not just end here. They have famous Dojima Roll I've been dying to have for years!!! If you haven't heard of Dojima Rolls, they are Osaka originated, highly popular roll cakes similar to Swiss roll, but with much more cream filling inside.
Not only does it come in original flavor but it is also available in green tea and chocolate! Oh God, am I dreaming right now? It was just such an unexpected, delightful discovery. Cafe Hanamizuki seems to call them simply "Japanese Chiffon Roll Cakes", but I recognized that round cream filled center only attributed to Dojima rolls.
It tasted exactly the way I imagined; soft and fluffy whipped cream hugged by lightweight, bouncy sponge cake. The cream is minimally sweetened and tastes extremely fresh. You won’t find any of greasy, filmy, overly sugary unpleasantness (commonly found in low quality creams), from this chiffon roll cake.

Moving on to the lunch combo set, I selected Hawaiian and Sukiyaki for rice balls, Okra with bonito flakes as appetizer, and Tofu Tofu as miso soup. Pickled vegetables came along with the set.

Sukiyaki rice ball tasted like delicious Gyudon in form of rice ball. Hawaiian to my surprise did not contain any pineapples, but spam and rice combination is a universal truth that can’t ever go wrong. I want to say the red flakes seasoned with the rice are hot pepper flakes but it wasn't spicy. So perhaps it was tomato?
Okra with bonito flakes was another interesting dish. I detected tangy and sweet flavor from lemon and honey; okra itself is ever so slightly spicy but the bonito (fish) flakes gently enfold the heat, perfectly balancing each other.  Pickled vegetables are refreshing and crisp both texture and taste-wise, and the miso soup was simply satisfying comfort food.

Each food was mild yet seriously addicting, and once I finished the meal my stomach was completely and utterly stuffed. I left the café feeling extremely satisfied-- will bring my beloved people with me next time.
